AIDS Walk Houston
Resurrection MCC participates in the annual Houston AIDS Walk, which increases community awareness and educates Houstonians about HIV/AIDS. As a benefiting agency, Resurrection MCC receives nearly 70% of the funds our team raises to provide ministry with those affected by HIV/AIDS, host support groups, assist with funerals, and other related activities. Proceeds also benefit AIDS Foundation Houston and other local HIV/AIDS service organizations. Sign up for the walk at www.ResurrectionMCC.org/aids-walk.
Pride Charities hosts this annual event in which non-perishable food and cash donations are collected for several weeks leading up to Christmas in order to provide everything needed for a family to prepare an abundant holiday meal. Over 150 bags filled with non-perishables, as well as a gift card to purchase perishable items, are provided within a reusable, insulated grocery bag.
Nonprofit organizations that are in alignment with the mission, vision, and values or Resurrection MCC are invited to attend Sunday Worship and host a table in the Gathering Place after both services to share information about their mission to our congregation, distribute materials, and encourage volunteerism and community service.
Dining Out for Life
We partner with AIDS Foundation Houston to support the national effort, “Dining Out for Life.” Numerous restaurants across Houston also participate, donating at least 25% of food bills for one day in April. We gather a group of almost 100 folks each year to dine at a participating restaurant, enjoy delicious food and company, with proceeds benefiting AFH. www.diningoutforlife.com
Houston Food Bank
Volunteers from Resurrection MCC participate several times a year in support of their efforts to end hunger. We have participated in the Backpack Buddy effort to provided food over the the weekend for at-risk children in schools grade K-12, and with the Carousel and Re-Pack Project processing over 60,000 pounds of food that go out to our hungry neighbors. www.houstonfoodbank.org
This cultural celebration reaffirms African-American people, their ancestors and culture. With the help and support of our Resurrection MCC sisters and brothers, and many others from the community, we share music, poetry and reflections that highlight the beauty and accomplishments of this community.
Pride Festival & Parade
We host a booth at the Pride Festival proclaiming God’s inclusive love for all people with a special outreach (like Jesus) to those on the margins. In the Pride Parade, we have a float featuring a musical group, as well as a large walking group. This is one of our most visible outreach efforts with more than 325,000 people attending the parade. www.pridehouston.org
School Supply Drive
At the beginning of each school year, we collect school supplies for students at a local elementary school.
Transgender Day of Remembrance
Our clergy and volunteers partner with the event organizers to provide our community with an opportunity to honor the memory of individuals of transgender experience whose lives were cut short due to anti-transgender violence. Remembrance affords members of the transgender community and their allies with an opportunity to publicly acknowledge our humanity, our loss and our strength as a community. www.tgdor.org
Transgender Unity Banquet
Resurrection MCC has been a proud sponsors of the annual Houston Transgender Unity Banquet since 2006. Proceeds from the banquet supports the Peggy Rudd Transgender Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to local transgender persons who are attending accredited colleges and universities. www.htuc.org
