Associate Pastor

Position Description and Purpose

Job Summary:

The Associate Pastor has primary responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, and supervision of congregational engagement through the programming and pastoral care ministries (P&PC) of the church. The Associate Pastor serves as the primary point of contact and accountability for the pastoral care team and the programming for children, youth, adults, and seniors.

Essential Functions:

  • Proactively communicate, support and fulfill the mission, vision, core values, purposes, and goals of the church.
  • Contribute to the visioning and development of spiritual growth opportunities and coordinate the planning and execution of all educational programming advancing inclusivity, community, spiritual transformation, and justice.
  • Play strategic role in design, selection and implementation of RMCC’s online and on campus adult programs that include Creating a Life that Matters, discipleship courses, education workshops, Bible studies, leadership development, Women’s Ministries, Men’s Ministries, spiritual retreats, and core offerings.
  • Recruits, mentors, and equips instructors/teachers/leaders that can facilitate the learning of adults and children through specific spiritual growth opportunities. This might include working with the Senior Pastor on the annual leadership retreat.
  • Prepare annual ministry plan and budget request for programming and pastoral care ministries and submit to the Senior Pastor.
  • Act as first line supervisor for all volunteer and paid P&PC ministry staff. In consultation with the Senior Pastor, conduct a yearly review of department staff.
  • Review all communications related to the P&PC ministries and forward it to the Executive Team for approval of release. Advertise staffing needs, volunteer opportunities, and special events in various publications.
  • Exercise the spiritual leadership roles of collaborative worship planning, presides in worship, preaching, and teaching. Participates in other congregational life as assigned by the Senior Pastor.
  • Act as a liaison for the church with denominational and interdenominational groups and other public appearances as necessary.
  • Adhere to all Resurrection MCC Policies. Identify, define, and communicate operating procedures. The operating procedures should be forwarded to the Senior Pastor for approval before they become effective.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field; Master of Divinity is desirable.
  2. Experience in child development.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in teaching and preaching is required.
  4. Ordination as clergy with in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, or eligibility for ordination is preferred.
  5. A minimum of two years of experience serving as a staff member or volunteer leader in a Metropolitan Community Church or other similar inclusive faith community is required.
  6. Ability to deal effectively with the public at large and be a“face”ofResurrection’s mission, vision, and values is required.
  7. Knowledge of the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer community is required.
  8. Passion and aptitude for drawing others into a relationship with God.
  9. Acceptable background checks for criminal and credit history are required.

Director of Communications

Job Summary: The Director of Communications has primary responsibility for coordinating the creation, implementation, and marketing analytics of a comprehensive communication strategy that includes, but is certainly not limited to, social media, website, graphics, public relations, external communications, advertising and marketing, as well as our online communities including worship and programming.

Essential Functions:

  • Proactively communicate, support and fulfill the mission, vision, core values, purposes and goals of the church.
  • Assume a strategic role in design and implementation of RMCC’s overall communication strategy.
  • Cultivate and manage volunteer group(s) of social media experts, graphic artists, podcasters, app and web developers, videographers, video producers and editors, as well as writers and editors to create content to support all methods of communication.
  • Create and communicate Brand guidelines to those in leadership roles.
  • Coordinate with all ministry leadership to communicate the Brand guidelines and ensure consistency. Assist with developing and adhering to standards for design, organization, and content to present a consistent message and image.
  • Cultivate and communicate a coherent understanding of Resurrection MCC’s mission, vision, and values among a wide range of ministry audiences.
  • Function as the primary point of contact and a key consultant to the management team regarding promotions, public relations, advertising, and media inquiries.
  • Become known across diverse communities in Houston as a key voice of Resurrection MCC, to lift Resurrection MCC leaders, and to position Resurrection MCC as a known instrument of justice and equality in the local community, across the Metropolitan Community Churches denomination, and beyond.
  • Actively participate to provide consulting and digital content (worship, music, marketing materials, program offerings) to our global denomination as well as local community ministry partners.
  • Participates in other congregational life as assigned by the Senior Pastor.
  • Work closely with ministry leaders, developers, creative resources and other stakeholders to gather requirements and to identify opportunities using online communication.
  • Utilize available technology to advance ministry processes, operational efficiencies and support critical ministry objectives.
  • Make continuous quality improvements to the process by which the communication content and channels are developed and maintained in the face of ministry growth.
  • Monitor success through an established set of metrics (e.g. increased website use, shortened resolution time, user feedback mechanisms, etc.).
  • Aggressively pursue the visibility of Resurrection MCC in the community at large in order to drive growth.
  • Implement and maintain community events calendar to increase awareness of community networking opportunities to the staff, volunteers, and congregation.
  • Recruits, mentors, and equips C&CNR staff and volunteer team leads that can facilitate the mobilization of members and friends through specific opportunities.
  • Provide direct leadership to the C&CNR ministries if leadership is vacant or as needed support current leaders through administration, training, and mentoring their work as teams within the department.
  • Prepare annual ministry plan and budget request for C&CNR ministries and submit to the Senior Pastor for presentation to the Board of Directors.
  • Make recommendations to the Senior and Executive Pastors regarding personnel; including hiring, review, salary, professional growth, and termination. Act as first line supervisor for all paid C&CNR ministry personnel and volunteers. In conjunction with the Senior Pastor, conduct a yearly review of all department related personnel.
  • Act as a liaison for the church with denominational and interdenominational groups and other public appearances as necessary.
  • Review all communications including press releases related to the C&CNR ministries and forward it to the Executive Team for approval of release. Advertise staffing needs, volunteer opportunities, and special events in various publications.
  • Adhere to all Resurrection MCC Policies. Identify, define, and communicate operating procedures. The operating procedures should be forwarded to the Senior Pastor for approval before they become effective.

  5. A minimum of two years of experience serving as a staff member or volunteer leader in a Metropolitan Community Church or other similar inclusive faith community is required.
  6. Ability to deal effectively with the public at large and be a voice and face of and for Resurrection’s mission, vision, and values is required.

Sanctuary Choir Director

Position Description and Purpose

Position Available:  Church Choir Director (part-time)

Our vibrant, diverse, progressive, welcoming, and affirming faith community, Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church of Houston, Texas, seeks to fill the recently vacated position of part-time director for the Sanctuary Choir.  The Sanctuary Choir sings traditional and contemporary sacred music as well as occasional secular pieces when appropriate.  Along with the Gospel Ensemble (singing music from the African-American Gospel tradition) and the Resurrection Mass Choir (singing various styles), the Sanctuary Choir forms the foundation for other music programming at the church.

  • Requirements for this position include:
  • A bachelor’s degree in music, music education, or a related field, or commensurate experience;
  • Proven excellence in and passion for directing and performing choral music;
  • The ability to lead congregational hymns, songs, and other liturgical music;
  • Expertise and patience in working with a wide range of musical abilities; and
  • Comfort with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual/ally (LGBTQIA) communities, without condition, prejudice, or judgment.

The Sanctuary Choir Director is expected to:

  • Select, teach, and direct music for weekly choir rehearsals (currently on Tuesday evenings);
  • Select and direct two choral pieces twice a month (currently on the second and fourth Sundays);
  • Select and direct choral pieces for the Mass Choir rotationally with other directors, as assigned;
  • Demonstrate and encourage collegiality and community within and beyond the choir so as to inspire the choir and the congregation as well as to entice choir participation by new members;
  • Grow the choir in musical prowess and in membership;
  • Collaborate with the entire Worship Arts Department (dance, liturgical theatre, other choirs and ensembles, soloists, and instrumentalists) for blended worship services as scheduled; and
  • Cooperate and strategize with the Senior Pastor, Worship Arts Coordinator, Worship Arts Planning Team, Audio Visual Team, accompanists, other clergy, and church staff to plan, create, and deliver inspiring worship services and other events in the life of the church.

In addition, the Sanctuary Choir performs in an annual Christmas Eve musical program, during Holy Week and Easter services, in LGBTQIA Pride celebration services, and in an annual concert. The choir sometimes participates in community and charitable events and has occasionally toured to sing at other MCC congregations and conferences. Of particular note, Resurrection marks its 50th anniversary in 2022, and the Sanctuary Choir is anticipated to play an integral role in the celebratory events as they unfold.

Skill as a pianist is desired, although not required.
